I welcome the Government's announcement over the weekend that life sentences will be introduced for those who cause death by dangerous driving, and for careless drivers who kill while under the influence of drink or drugs. The Government will also create a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving.
We have all seen the emotional campaigns and many of us will know of situations where lives and families have been ruined or torn apart due to utter selfishness and stupidity of careless drivers.
Nothing can bring back lost loved ones or repair life-altering injuries but at least justice can be done and the punishment for this heinous act will now match the crime. We must do everything we can to ensure our roads are safe for all of us who use them - and that we have the right punishments and deterrents at the disposal of our courts to achieve them.
