During the first session of Treasury Questions since the re-shuffle, I welcomed the Chief Secretary back to his place and commend to him last year’s “Building Great Britons” report by the all-party parliamentary group for the first 1,001 critical days, which I chair. 

The report revealed that the cost of getting it wrong on perinatal mental health and child neglect is some £23 billion. 

I asked him whether he agreed that investing in young people at an early stage is every bit as beneficial to the economy as investing in roads and infrastructure.

1001 Critical Days

There is a growing acknowledgement that those first early years of a child’s life are absolutely crucial. Getting it right as parents with professional help and public resource to support where needed has the potential to make a huge difference to how that child will grow into an adult contributing to society.
