One very important job the new Mayor of Sussex will have, will be to take over the responsibilities of the Police and Crime Commissioner.
In my 27 years as MP, I received many complaints about police not being visible enough, not following up with crime reports, and too many cases being dropped despite the evidence being there, despite increased police numbers.
Regrettably, we also learned earlier this year that Worthing has become something of a shoplifting hotspot.
I am a big supporter of the police but we have got to do better. If I am fortunate enough to become Mayor, I will work with the police to make sure they are out and about, seen and proactive and keeping Sussex people safe. I also want Sussex police to use the strengthened powers we gave them for much swifter action on moving on unauthorised traveller encampments before they inflict mayhem and disrupt local communities.
