It was a pleasure as always to act as compere to welcome the Worthing Children’s Parade into Steyne Gardens at the end of their magnificent march around Worthing, as I have every year since the event was first established 10 years ago. This year it was the biggest and best yet with perfect conditions to show off the incredible creations from a record 19 schools taking part unless you were one of the teachers or parents having to lug the large characters round town in the heat!

This year it was even more special as the theme was the books of children’s author Julia Donaldson who was there in person to talk to the children and sign books. Coming soon after the tragic events in Kensington, London Bridge and Manchester it was a welcome opportunity to put aside the sadness and horror briefly and celebrate what has always been a happy and fun time to celebrate children and showcase some of the extraordinary schools we have in our community.

Well done to the parade organising committee under Caroline Woodward who put in so much work and also to Annette Charles who has been responsible for the accompanying fair in Steyne gardens for each of the last 10 years and is this year bowing out after the biggest and best yet. Our thanks to all of the volunteers, parents, teachers, governors and of course children who made this such a special event again. Anything Brighton can do we can do so much better!
