Southern Rail: Industrial Dispute and Ombudsman

Southern Rail - or Southern Fail as it has become known - is one of the biggest issues facing many residents in East Worthing & Shoreham. I have been critical of all parties; the Department for Transport; the management of Southern, who I think are just not up to running the franchise; and the trade unions that have been carrying out meaningless strikes.

I was pleased to hear ASLEF have called off their industrial action, which means we can now hopefully get onto reforming the franchise after the general election. A Conservative government and a Conservative Transport Secretary would review the franchise and I suspect would break it up and remove Southern's management.

The Conservatives manifesto also made a commitment to setting up a Railway Ombudsman, something I first suggested in a Private Members' Bill in Parliament before dissolution, see here: https://www.timloughton.com/news/practical-way-forward-establish-network-wide-rail-ombudsman-and-redesign-system-compensation - the ombudsman would have real teeth to ensure that rail companies are properly punished if they fail to deliver a decent service as well as ensuring that commuters are properly compensated for their delays.
