To All MPs

Dear Colleague,

Today’s Budget reiterates our commitment to improve every child’s education.

We are proud of what we have achieved – 86 percent of schools are today rated as Good or Outstanding, up from 68 percent in 2010. Schools will receive over £42bn of core funding this year. We created 825,000 more school places between 2010 and 2017, and today there are over 450,000 teachers in schools – 10,000 more than in 2010.

But we know there is more to be done. That is why the Budget today announces that we will provide an additional £400m for schools in England to spend on improving their facilities. This funding will be allocated directly to schools this financial year with the average primary school receiving around £10,000 and the average secondary school around £50,000.

Through the Barnett formula, the Scottish Government will receive £39m, the Welsh Government £24m and the Northern Ireland Executive £13m.

This builds on our existing commitment to invest £23 billion towards improving, refurbishing and replacing school buildings between 2016-2021, and will ensure schools get the modern equipment and well-maintained facilities they need.

PHILIP HAMMOND
